Change is the pattern of life and SEO too. It has seen that there have been many changes made in recent past in search engine optimization field. Google keeps updating the SEO strategies now and then. Accordingly adaption is the result of change. We adapt the new changes and techniques quickly and it is mandatory too. The introduction of penguin and panda has changes the version of SEO.

For some past years, search engine optimization has taken a lot of things into consideration, evolving and developing with more strategies in response to the ever-changing algorithms of search engines, especially Google. Nowadays, old pattern SEO methods and techniques need to be modified as Google is continuously updating. Content, backlinks and Meta tags also need to be put rightly with uniqueness. Google Penguin update is being initiated to minimize the web spamming rate and remove the spam websites that have been adopting black hat measures to generate better rankings.

Even through the Hummingbird update, Google has assured everyone in the SEO industry that this new algorithm is designed more to discourage "black-hat" SEO tactics and even gives more rewards to original, high-quality content. While hiring a SEO company, reviews are of immense help in this regard. If the reporting comes from an authentic and neutral one, you are to some extent certain about the credibility. There are many fake review sites too, so be sure that you are visiting a reputated website. Ethical SEO services are the only one that allows your business to survive web regulation.

Penguin 5, With The Penguin 2.1 Spam-Filtering Algorithm

The fifth confirmed release of Google’s “Penguin” spam fighting algorithm is live. That makes it Penguin 5 by our count. But since this Penguin update is using a slightly improved version of Google’s “Penguin 2″ second-generation technology, Google itself is calling it “Penguin 2.1.” Don’t worry. We’ll explain the numbering nonsense below, as well as what this all means for publishers.

New Version Of Penguin Live Today

The head of Google’s web spam team, Matt Cutts, shared the news on Twitter, saying the latest release would impact about 1 percent of all searches:

The link that Cutts points at, by the way, explains what Penguin was when it was first launched. It doesn’t cover anything new or changed with the latest release.

Previous Updates

Here are all the confirmed releases of Penguin to date:
  • Penguin 1 on April 24, 2012 (impacting around 3.1% of queries)
  • Penguin 2 on May 26, 2012 (impacting less than 0.1%)
  • Penguin 3 on October 5, 2012 (impacting around 0.3% of queries)
  • Penguin 4 (AKA Penguin 2.0) on May 22, 2013 (impacting 2.3% of queries)
  • Penguin 5 (AKA Penguin 2.1) on Oct. 4, 2013 (impacting around 1% of queries)

Why Penguin 2.1 AND Penguin 5?

If us talking about Penguin 5 in reference to something Google is calling Penguin 2.1 hurts your head, believe us, it hurts ours, too. But you can pin that blame back on Google. Here’s why.

When Google started releasing its “Panda” algorithm designed to fight low-quality content, it called the first one simply “Panda.” So when the second came out, people referred to that as “Panda 2.” When the third came out, people called that Panda 3 — causing Google to say that the third release, because it was relatively minor, really only should be called Panda 2.1 — the “point” being used to indicate how much a minor change it was.

Google eventually — and belatedly — indicated that a Panda 3 release happened, causing the numbering to move into Panda 3.0, Panda 3.1 and so on until there had been so many “minor” updates that we having to resort to going further out in decimal places to things like Panda 3.92.

That caused us here at Search Engine Land to decide it would be easier all around if we just numbered any confirmed update sequentially, in order of when they came. No matter how “big” or “small” an update might be, we’d just give it the next number on the list: Penguin 1, Penguin 2, Penguin 3 and so on.

Thanks For The Headache, Google

That worked out fine until Penguin 4, because Google typically didn’t give these updates numbers itself. It just said there was an update, and left it to us or others to attach a number to it.

But when Penguin 4 arrived, Google really wanted to stress that it was using what it deemed to be a major, next-generation change in how Penguin works. So, Google called it Penguin 2, despite all the references to a Penguin 2 already being out there, despite the fact it hadn’t really numbered many of these various updates before.

Today’s update, as can be seen above, has been dubbed Penguin 2.1 — so supposedly, it’s a relatively minor change to the previous Penguin filter that was being used. However, if it’s impacting around 1 percent of queries as Google says, that means it is more significant than what Google might have considered to be similar “minor” updates of Penguin 1.1 and Penguin 1.2.

What Is Penguin Again? And How Do I Deal With It?

For those new to the whole “Penguin” concept, Penguin is a part of Google’s overall search algorithm that periodically looks for sites that are deemed to be spamming Google’s search results but somehow still ranking well. In particular, it goes after sites that may have purchased paid links.

If you were hit by Penguin, you’ll likely know if you see a marked drop in traffic that begins today or tomorrow. To recover, you’ll need to do things like disavow bad links or manually have those removed. Filing a reconsideration request doesn’t help, because Penguin is an automated process. Until it sees that what it considers to be bad has been removed, you don’t recover.

If you were previously hit by Penguin and have taken actions hopefully meant to fix that, today and tomorrow are the days to watch. If you see an improvement in traffic, that’s a sign that you’ve escaped Penguin.

Here are previous articles with more on Penguin recovery and how it and other filters work as part of the ranking system

What About Hummingbird?

If you’re wondering about how Penguin fits into that new Google Hummingbird algorithm  you may have heard about, think of Penguin as a part of Hummingbird, not as a replacement for it.

Hummingbird is like Google’s entire ranking engine, whereas Penguin is like a small part of that engine, a filter that is removed and periodically replaced with what Google considers to be a better filter to help keep out bad stuff.

Google News Showing Web Site Results For Some Navigational Queries

Google News is now showing the top web search result listing in the news results when the query has navigational intent.

For example, if you search Google News for [ask.fm] at the top of the search results page, you will see a search snippet and link to their web site. Clicking on the link takes you to the ask.fm web site and not to a news story. Clicking on the “all results” link below that listing, takes you to more web results. Below that, you will find the news results.

Here is a screen shot:

google-news-navigational-results

This works for me sporadically for searches on large and even small brands. It works for searching in Google News for [apple], [microsoft], [microsoft.com], and others. But doesn’t seem to work when I search for some other large brands, such as [mcdonalds]. It does even work for smaller brands, such as searching for [rustybrick] but does not work when searching for [search engine land] or even [searchengineland.com].

Google is constantly testing new search features, but this new feature seems to be rolling out as we speak.

Google Releases Seven Videos On Typical Manual Spam Actions

Earlier today, Google launched manual spam actions to Google Webmaster Tools where you can see if your site currently has a manual spam action.

To help those who have received some of these manual action notifications, Google created seven videos for the most common manual action notifications. The videos include user-generated spam, hidden text and/or keyword stuffing, pure spam, thin content with little or no added value video, unnatural Links to site video, unnatural links from your site and unnatural Links to site – impacts links.

I’ve watched the videos and Google, mostly Matt Cutts, does a very good job giving examples of the types of sites or actions that are affected by these manual penalties. They give examples of the sites or pages that may be impacted by the penalty and even sometime offering the chances of recovering from such a penalty. Then Google goes onto how to resolve the issue so that you can submit a reconsideration request. You most likely can learn from watching these videos.

Here are the videos:

User-generated spam video:

Hidden text and/or keyword stuffing video:

Pure spam video:

Thin content with little or no added value video:

Unnatural Links to site video:

Unnatural links from your site video:

Google Launches Manual Spam Actions Viewer, Streamlines Reconsideration Process

Google is adding a new feature in Webmaster Tools that will leave no doubt when a site’s search rankings are affected by a manual webspam action.

It’s called the Manual Actions viewer, and it’s available today under the “Search Traffic” tab. The new tool complements the email notifications that Google already sends when it takes manual action against a website, giving site owners a way to check their site’s status on their own at any time.

Google says fewer than two percent of domains in its index are manually removed due to spam, so the vast majority of webmasters won’t find anything when they visit the Manual Actions viewer other than a message saying “No manual webspam actions found.”

But for sites that are affected, the Manual Actions viewer will show existing webspam problems under two headings: Site-wide matches and Partial matches. In both cases, Google will indicate what type of problem exists from a list of about a dozen categories — things like “hidden text and/or keyword stuffing,” “thin content,” “pure spam” and others.

When there are Partial matches listed, Google will also show the affected URLs for each type of spam problem. There’s a limit, though, of 1,000 URLs per type of problem listed. Google says this will be more than enough for all but the largest sites (like YouTube, for example). In the screenshots below, you can see that a sample site has a “Partial match” notice about thin content, and Google is showing a half-dozen affected URLs.

manual-actions-viewer-1
manual-actions-viewer-2

As you can see above, there’s also quick access to a new “Request a Review” button. This will be available any time there are manual webspam actions listed. Clicking that opens a pop-up window where the webmaster can give Google details on how its problems have been fixed.

Simultaneously, visitors to Google’s existing page about reconsideration requests will first be invited to use the Manual Actions viewer to make sure that there’s really a manual action in place.

This new tool is part of Google’s ongoing efforts to increase communication with webmasters about spam and other issues affecting their sites. Each of the dozen or so categories of manual actions used in this new tool is also getting a dedicated help/info page (available from the “Learn More” link in the screenshot above) with some new videos from Matt Cutts explaining the type of webspam problem that Google has identified.

The Manual Actions viewer is available now in all languages that Google Webmaster Tools currently supports.

Local Search Marketers Guesstimate 2013 Google Ranking Factors

Despite the annual changes in the local search ecosystem, the ranking factors that Google uses to determine its local search results haven’t changed much over the past year.

So say the 35 local search marketers that contributed to the 2013 Local Search Ranking Factors — organized again this year by David Mihm, and published this year on Moz.com (his employer’s website).

The survey looks at general local ranking factors first, then dives into a long list of specifics (more than 100 in all) and negative ranking factors — local search no-nos, you could call them.

The most influential general ranking factors, according to the survey experts, are
  • Place Page Signals (proximity, having a keyword in the business name, etc.)
  • On-Page Signals (keyword in title tags, domain authority, etc.)
  • External Location Signals (citations from other sites, name/address/phone consistency, etc.)
  • Link Signals (quality of inbound links, anchor text, etc.)
  • Review Signals (how many, how frequent they are, etc.)

And getting more specific, the top local factors were some of the same that they’ve been in past years: using the correct categories, being physically located in the city being searched, high-quality citations and clear/consistent Name/Address/Phone information.

There’s much more to review in the full survey results, but that should give you a taste of what to expect. If you do local search marketing for yourself or for clients, it’s a must read (as it is every year).
